What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that effects over 4 million Americans and causes excessive sweating that can cause a person to sweat excessively, even if they're not stressed or overheated. Those who have hyperhidrosis commonly experience heavy sweating in the hands, face, feet, scalp or underarms.  Impacting men and women alike, hyperhidrosis occurs due to overactive sweat glands (over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system) that causes heavy sweating that can soak through and stain clothing, effect a persons self confidence and interfere with your job or social life. While hyperhidrosis is usually not a dangerous condition, it often causes self-esteem issues and other psychological difficulties for individuals affected by it.  Chronic sweating of the hands and feet may cause maceration of the skin with superimposed fungal or bacterial infections, craking of the skin and an adverse odor.

The good news is at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, our team specializes in effective ways to treat excessive sweating using Botox.   While Botox has been typically used to treat lines and wrinkles in the cosmetic arena, it has been FDA approved to treat over-active sweating.

If you have issues with excessive perspiration and want to take back your self-confidence, call our office in Midland, TX to find out more about hyperhidrosis and schedule your consultation with our physicians.

What Are Some Causes and Treatments for Hyperhidrosis?

While sweat is often caused by factors, like heat, physical exertion, or nervousness, hyperhidrosis has a set of specific causes. Some individuals may have an issue with their nervous system that causes the sweat glands to overwork while others may experience heavy sweating as a result of a medical condition or as a side effect of certain medications.

Our office specializes in various different options to treat hyperhidrosis so the option advised for you could vary based on your health needs, in addition to the scope and severity of your sweating. A few of the common therapies for hyperhidrosis include prescription-strength antiperspirants, as well as oral or topical drugs. Botox injections may also be an option to provide more substantial outcomes by temporarily preventing the release of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine at the presynaptic nerve ending.  when is is not released the sweat glands will not be stimulated causing decrease or loss of sweating in the affected area.  Our team will work with you to ensure the best option to relieve excessive perspiration and allow you to rediscover your confidence.

Call Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center today to schedule your appointment with our physicians to relieve your excessive sweating problems.

What is treatment like with Botox?

In the treatment area a topical anesthetic ointment or cream is applied for 45 minutes.  The area is then disinfected and with a micro-needle Botox is placed under the skin about 1 cm apart in the area being treated.  After your treatment with Botox you can resume you normal activities as directed by your physician.

A decrease in sweating will begin in approximately 5-10 days but maximum effect in 2 weeks.  Treatment may last up to 9 months or more.
