What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory ailment that affects oilier areas of the body — most commonly the scalp, chest, and face. This condition causes the skin to become red or purple and can also cause flaking, scaliness, or itching in the affected area. The medical community is still researching what causes seborrheic dermatitis, but it is thought to be caused by environmental and genetic factors that trigger the body's sebaceous (oil-producing) glands to overwork, resulting in inflammation. This disease can manifest at any stage of life, from infancy (when it might be diagnosed as cradle cap) through adulthood. Seborrheic dermatitis may be worsened by triggers, like changes in the weather, stress or anxiety, illness, or as a side effect of some medications. At Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, our providers offer a selection of treatments to manage seborrheic dermatitis and help prevent future occurrences. How Is Seborrheic Dermatitis Diagnosed and Treated?

Seborrheic dermatitis is typically diagnosed at Basin Dermatology & Cosmetic Center with a routine skin evaluation, though a lab biopsy may be ordered to rule out other diseases.

While there is no cure for seborrheic dermatitis, there are several treatment options to help control your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of flare-ups. Those include:

  • Medicated shampoo: There are a variety of over-the-counter shampoos containing ingredients, like salicylic acid or coal tar, that are designed to fight inflammation and reduce skin flaking. A handful of antifungal shampoos have also proven effective for treatment.
  • Steroid creams: Topical corticosteroids are often effective in reducing inflammation and itchiness. It's important to avoid overusing these solutions to prevent the body from getting accustomed to the treatment.
  • Nonsteroidal creams: These anti-inflammatory creams offer the benefits of topical steroids without the risk of certain side effects.
  • Topical antifungal creams and shampoos: These products can reduce the presence of yeast on oily skin, which is thought to be a contributing factor for seborrheic dermatitis outbreaks.

Our dermatologists will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to control dermatitis that takes your needs and goals into account.
